Classes

The Chopin Academy of Music has three basic programs of study that students may opt for when registering for private lessons. Scroll below to read the overview and requirements of each program.

Music History, Ages 8-14
This light-hearted and fun class is a great supplement to private lessons or any interest in music at all. Discussions involve story-telling about the lives and music of the composers, while learning important facts about style periods, important musical locales, and genres. Some introduction to theory is included. A favorite of students and parents, who are invited to sit in as well.
Meets: Saturdays at 2:50 pm.

Beginning Keyboard, Ages 8-12
In this class, students get hands-on experience learning technique and repertoire, in addition to new skills, such as accompanying, improvisation, and keyboard theory. This class is a perfect solution for families who own keyboards or want to economize while still learning piano and have a lot of fun doing it.
Meets: Saturdays at 2:00 pm
Begins: September 13, 2008

Music Theory, Ages 6-8
This class teaches the fundamentals of music theory for those young musicians who have learned to read basic music notation. Ear-training and assignments in writing make up some of the exercises done in class. This class teaches skills that are critical for a developing musician.

Performance Class
The performance class is a great opportunity for students to play through their works in front of peers prior to an important performance. It allows them to cope with the issues of live performing and learn valuable strategies of stress management and stage etiquette, thereby becoming more confident recitalists.
Meets: Saturdays at 2:50 pm on special dates.
Dates: November 8, 22, January 17, 31, February 28, March 7, 14, April 25, and May 2.
Requirements: Parents/Guardians not allowed during the class to help reduce performance anxiety.
Special: Open to all CAM students.

Adult Beginning Keyboard
This class teaches the basics of note-reading and playing the keyboard by introducing exercises and easy pieces. Quickly, students will excel and learn more difficult pieces and learn other skills along the way, including jazz and pop styles, ensemble playing, and accompanying.
Meets: Tuesdays at 7 pm
Begins: September 16, 2008
Ends: January 20, subject to the closures of the CAM academic calendar.

Theory for High Schoolers
In this accelerated class, students ages 13-18 learn the basics of music theory and quickly jump into fundamentals of college theory, including voice-leading, chromatic harmony, and including ear-training. A great course for those considering a career or future studies in music.
Meets: Saturdays at 3:45 pm.

Fun Keyboard, Ages 13-18
In this fun class, students can keep up their skills, learn new techniques of improvisation and pop song accompaniment, among many other elements.
